Lost my job -- what should I do??
![]() It's no picnic being unemployed. It's part of my employment history so I think I know something about it. Here are some tips for how to confront it. when you get tired of reading about how to find that plum job, how to act on an interview and how to organize your resume. The most important thing about an empty day is not to fill it with single purpose activities. I mean not everything you do should be about finding a job. You should keep yourself in good physical shape, or try to, even if it means just taking a short walk. Make it brisk, and give it a destination, such as a small item you can buy when you pass or reach a store. Physical exercise produces endorphins -- those yummy brain chemicals that you need so badly when your depression tries to creep in. Something else that is crucial to help you get off the subject of you and your job is to get ON the subject of someone much more unfortunate. That means volunteering, find something that you can handle, whether you like children seniors or diseases that plague some people. After this your soul will fill up in a way you never dreamed of, I promise you, and your problems will lessen, albeit for a short while. Get a regular gig of helping and you will like yourself better too and show up more confident for your interviews. Now that you have time to play, another computer related toy is the social media. Don't be ashamed of unemployment – toot your horn everywhere and what better way to do it is on FACE Book, LinkedIn or Twitter. Don't get depressed, be funny. Write things like, "Just as I was getting really good at ----- I felt the blade of the guillotine ax come down on me." Never mention your prior place of employment; At different times on different sites, work in mentions of your talents, even if you didn't use them on your last job. For example, if you speak a foreign language, or play an instrument, publish articles etc.- someone may pick up on it. Another volunteer related activity is not helping the unfortunate, but teaching, or tutoring, sharing your special skill. Actually you could charge for this, and temporarily, or who knows, down the road, permanently. Do you sing, play an instrument, are you supremely physically fit, do you know about nutrition (don't hold yourself out as a degreed professional only as someone who has always known about something.) During the summer, if you are smart about a subject, you could offer to tutor individuals or groups.
